Liver health is a critical concern for veterans due to higher risks of liver diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The Liver Health for Veterans Information Center includes timely information on early detection, lifestyle management, and helpful resources and tools.
Metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a liver condition characterized by fat accumulation in the liver linked to metabolic risk factors such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and insulin resistance.
Cirrhosis is a chronic liver disease marked by progressive scarring and impaired liver function, typically caused by long-term liver injury from conditions such as hepatitis, alcohol use, or metabolic disorders.
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer, typically arising in the setting of chronic liver disease or cirrhosis.
