Hepatitis C

1980 was a very special year for me. It was the year I gave birth to my first child… a beautiful little girl. It was also the year I contracted Hepatitis C following a blood transfusion as a result of a postpartum hemorrhage. Unlike most, I did experience an acute phase of Hepatitis with abdominal pain, loss of appetite and jaundice. I was one of the lucky ones. Most people with Hepatitis C don’t know they are carrying the disease all the while their liver is under attack. As a nurse, I knew I needed to be my own advocate doing what ever I could to slow the progression of this unknown disease. No alcohol, nutritional diet, exercise, clean healthy lifestyle. It took three separate treatments (some experimental) over the course of 12 years but today I’m virus free… my miracle. I will forever be grateful to all those I’ve met along the way making this day possible… a day when those with Hepatitis C will know there is a cure.
