2021 ALF Michigan Academic Debates

Moderated by Dr. Kimberly Brown

ALF’s Academic Debates is an educational program which engages fellows and learning physicians from major academic institutions in friendly competition. Questions posed during the debates are ethical in nature with no right or wrong answer. The debates seek to stimulate higher thinking about significant issues which impact the lives of people living with liver disease. Debaters are judged on presentations, research to support their argument, and ability to respond quickly to the opposite viewpoint.

The Michigan Academic Debate program features debate teams from healthcare institutions from the state of Michigan.

DEBATE #1
This debate featured the Henry Ford Health Center and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. The Henry Ford Health Center team includes Dr. Kevin Harris, Dr. Armani Patel, Dr. Reena Salgia and Dr. Deepak Venkat. The University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center team includes Dr. Bianca Islam, Dr. Adrian Lindsey and Dr. Anthony Post. The debate discussion was based upon whether the COVID-19 vaccine should be mandated for wait listed liver patients.

DEBATE #2
This debate featured the Ascension Providence Hospital and the University of Michigan. The Ascension Providence Hospital team includes Dr. Areej Mazhar, Dr. Jalpa Patel and Dr. Marc Piper. The University of Michigan team includes Dr. Kira Newman, Dr. Abhishek Shenoy, Dr. Hari Conjeevaram and Dr. Pratima Sharma. The debate discussion was based upon the use of non-selective beta blockers in decompensated cirrhosis.
