Marathon Runners Take to the Big Apple to Raise Awareness of Liver Disease

October 31, 2023

The American Liver Foundation (ALF) is proud to once again be a member of the TCS New York City Marathon Official Charity Program for the 2023 race, which takes place on Sunday, November 5, 2023, in New York City’s five boroughs.

"We are so grateful for the support of the TCS New York City Marathon," said Lorraine Stiehl, Chief Executive Officer, American Liver Foundation (ALF). "No matter where someone is on their journey to liver health, the American Liver Foundation is here to support them. That’s why we are so honored that our runners have chosen to join us to help raise awareness and funds to help the nearly 100 million Americans affected by liver disease.”

The American Liver Foundation’s TCS New York City Marathon team is made up of runners with varying levels of experience from novice to advanced, most of whom have a connection to liver disease. All funds raised will go towards ALF’s mission to promote education, advocacy, support services and research for the prevention, treatment and cure of liver disease.

2023 New York City Marathon Liver Life Challenge Chair, Sara Kate Gillingham from Brooklyn, New York shares what running with Team ALF means for her, “It’s a thrill for me to be running my second NYC Marathon with ALF. In 2016, I had the honor of donating the larger lobe of my liver to my friend, Dave. In 2021, we ran the Marathon together for ALF and this year I’m taking on this challenge on my own. Every day that I run it’s with gratitude for my health and for my chance to continue to connect with others going through the liver donation process on both sides: recipients and donors. ALF plays such an important role in advocacy for donors and recipients, and it is such a pleasure taking on this mammoth race with ALF at my back.”

This marathon will be Alexandra Rishty’s first. “I'm running the TCS New York City Marathon and raising funds for American Liver Foundation in honor of my dad, who passed away on my birthday while waiting for a liver transplant,” said Alexandra who lives in Manhattan. “He was not only a lover of life, but a fighter in every sense. His battle against liver disease showcased his strong spirit and determination. Running this Marathon on November 5th now means even more to me. I'm feeling so many emotions and all I want to do is run. Every step I take during the Marathon will be a tribute to his strength and courage.”
