When my son, Sawyer, was just eight days old he was diagnosed with a rare liver disease called Biliary Atresia and underwent his first surgery.
When he turned six months old, he was in end stage liver failure and in need of a lifesaving transplant.
Sawyer’s uncle stepped up and was the first to get tested to be his living donor and went on to save his life by donating a portion of his liver.
Sawyer is now 20 months old and thriving and we could not be more grateful for his second chance at life. Sawyer is a warrior and although post-transplant life comes with some challenges, he takes on each bump in the road with a smile.
My biggest piece of advice for any liver patients or other members of the liver community is to find your liver family. I cant even imagine how much more difficult this journey would have been with out my fellow liver mommas and even though I haven’t met most of them in person, they helped me every step of the way.
