Mission:
Lifesharing Community Organ and Tissue Donation is committed to the life-saving and life-enhancing efforts of transplantation. We strive to be the leader in organ and tissue donation through education, collaboration, and the provision of quality service.
Founded in 1984 as a division of UCSD Medical Center, Lifesharing is one of 58 regional non-profits dedicated to the life-saving and life-enhancing benefits of organ and tissue donation. A federally designated organization, we provide organ recovery, donor family support, and educational services for the diverse population of approximately 3 million people in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Organ and tissue procurement services supply twenty-six donor hospitals and four local transplant centers with transplantable organs for the ever growing waiting list of 1,600 San Diego patients and 90,000 patients nationwide.
Regulation by the federal government through the Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS) monitors Lifesharing Organ Services. The Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN) have been designated by DHSS to provide
oversight and policy guidelines to all of the Organ Procurement Organizations (OPO) in the United States. To continue as a designated OPO, Lifesharing must meet donor and organ recovery metrics set by DHSS.
As a Donate Life Organization, Lifesharing is a member of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). This private, nonprofit organization operates the national organ allocation system. Lifesharing allocates organs according to UNOS guidelines to ensure equitable organ distribution in our community. Lifesharing is also accredited by the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) - a professional association providing national guidelines for OPOs. In addition to the Food and Drug Administration, state and local Health Departments also regulate Lifesharing Tissue Service.

Partnership for Prescription Assistance
PPA's main focus is on uninsured populations, but underinsured populations can contact PPA as well. PPA networks with 475 plans in the US and has one application that can be completed by phone or online. Based on answers to the PPA application questions, the database does a search for matches between patient information/chronic medication needs and plan requirements/medications.
The PPA is then able to print the applications for the matched plans and sends them to the patient, who in turn send in the application(s) to the plan(s). Medications arrive in two weeks (on average.)
