Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the buildup of extra fat in liver cells that is not caused by alcohol. MASLD used to be called Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
MASH tends to develop in people who are overweight or obese, or have diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides. However, some people have MASH even if they do not have any risk factors.
Note: MASH used to be called nonalcoholic steatohepaitits (NASH).
