Bile ducts become blocked due to inflammation and scarring or fibrosis, accumulating in the liver, where it gradually damages liver cells and causes cirrhosis, or fibrosis of the liver.
MASH tends to develop in people who are overweight or obese, or have diabetes, high cholesterol or high triglycerides. However, some people have MASH even if they do not have any risk factors.
Note: MASH used to be called nonalcoholic steatohepaitits (NASH).
In 2005 I was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and later with MASLD. Was also told that I didn’t qualify for a liver transplant.
