NASH Facebook Support Group
I am pleased to note that membership in the American Liver Foundation’s new NASH Facebook Support Group has surpassed 500 members. This support community is intended for those affected by Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). The group is open to anyone connected to NASH around the country and serves as a space for members to feel less alone, seek answers to participants’ questions and find the strength for another day.
The group went live in October 2018 and is moderated by Warren Hall, National Helpline Specialist and Kara Kunz, Community Outreach and Education Manager of ALF’s Desert Southwest Division. Discussion topics include NASH progression and symptoms, what to ask your doctor, diet and nutrition, understanding transplant procedures and dealing with stress and stigma.
When Kara asked members to comment on how the group has affected them, the response was immediate and overwhelming. One member said, “With this disease there is a need for a person to find people suffering from the same disease who are willing to share their tests, helpful hints that relieve pain, and how they cope…I don’t feel alone anymore.” Another stated, “This is a group of people with different diagnoses at different stages that make each other feel like they are not alone. There is no judging, only support.” A family member added, “It’s like having a group of friends that you’ve never met face-to-face, but they still understand what you’re going through.”
