Liver Transplantation

The Methodist Transplant Institute is home to one of the largest liver transplant programs in the country. Our program, established in 1982, has performed more than 2,000 liver transplants.

Our multidisciplinary liver transplant team includes transplant surgeons, transplant hepatologists, nurses, pharmacy, social workers and dietitians — all specialized in treating end-stage liver disease through liver transplantation. Our goal is to ensure that transplantation is the appropriate treatment option and help you navigate the journey with outstanding care both before and after transplantation.

Liver Transplantation and End-Stage Liver Disease

Liver transplantation surgically removes the diseased liver and replaces it with a healthy liver. Benefits and risks associated with this surgical procedure will be thoroughly discussed with your care team throughout our education and evaluation process.  You will be provided with all the information needed to decide whether liver transplantation is the best treatment option for you.

Liver Transplant Process

To determine if transplantation is the right treatment option, you will need to meet with our transplant team to complete a thorough medical, social and financial evaluation. Once you are referred to our program, our schedulers will make arrangements for you to come in for transplant education and to start the evaluation process. Our goal is to ensure that transplantation is the best treatment. During the evaluation stage, you will learn about transplantation and have the opportunity to ask questions.

Referrals

To make a referral for liver transplantation, please complete the referral form and fax all requested information to 901-478-3184. To speak with someone directly about your referral, please call 901-478-9183.

Once your referral is received and reviewed by our nurse coordinator, the patient will be scheduled to meet one of our transplant hepatologists. The physician will determine if the patient is ready to begin the evaluation for transplantation. If you are not ready for transplantation you can be followed by a Hepatologist in our Center for Advanced Liver Diseases.
