ALF Raises Awareness About Liver Cancer in October

November 2, 2018

Each October, the American Liver Foundation helps to raise awareness about liver cancer with a media campaign during Liver Cancer Awareness Month.

This year, we placed 30-second radio ads in New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, and Dallas, and billboards throughout the San Francisco/Bay area. I took part in a 15-minute interview on KTU Cares in NYC with Ghassan Abou-Alfa, MD, a Medical Oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and ALF presented a Liver Cancer Webinar on October 30th featuring a multidisciplinary team from California Pacific Medical Center. In addition, we supported the campaign via targeted digital ads to smart phones in Houston and Dallas and achieved national reach via social media, with targeted posts in Chicago.

But, I am most excited about the Liver Cancer Caregiver Roundtable, held on October 14th and 15th in New York City. Back in September, ALF launched a small targeted survey seeking input from liver cancer caregivers about their experiences. The results of this survey were used to formulate the discussion for the in-person roundtable. Eight caregivers traveled from around the country to participate.

Our objectives were to address the caregiver experience, identify unmet needs and identify opportunities to enhance educational resources and support services. The conversation focused on four key need areas:

  • Practical Help (household chores, driving to/from appointments, staying with the patient when the caregiver has to be away, etc.)
  • Emotional/Social Support (support groups, online support, family and friends, etc.)
  • Financial Impact (insurance, loss of income, etc.)
  • Medical Information (educational tools and resources, assistance communication with physicians, professional care team coordination, etc.)

The results of the discussion are being summarized into an executive summary that will inform the creation of proposals to support ALF programming for caregivers to those with liver cancer in the future. We at ALF are delighted to support the unsung heroes in the struggle against liver disease.
